HISTORY

We're Helping Youth! Inc. was originally developed in August 1994 to assist students throughout greater Marion County as they prepare to become productive members of workforce 2000, by providing community based educational opportunity and employability enhancement training programs. All of the original members, working on a voluntary basis and with only a limited amount of time, agreed that they could organize and conduct an annual college visitation tour along with a periodic workshop/seminar. These volunteers believed that more could be done and in February 1997 WHY! was officially incorporated with the State of Indiana and in December 1997 the program received its 501 © (3) tax status.

WHY! visits Clark Atlanta University

The visitation tours have grown into the cornerstone of We're Helping Youth! Starting with 3 one day tours in October 1994 to (1) Central State University and Wilberforce University (Wilberforce OH.), (2) Kentucky State University (Frankfort KY) and to (3) Tennessee State and Fisk Universities (Nashville TN.). In October 1995 and October 1996 the tour expanded to include simultaneous trips to Atlanta (overnight ) and to Nashville (overnight) and during spring break 1996 the tour included Howard University (D.C.), Morgan State University (Baltimore), Norfolk State University (Norfolk VA), Hampton University (Hampton VA), St. Augustine's College and Shaw University (Raleigh NC) and North Carolina A&T (Greensboro NC). Spring 1997 we visited Jackson St., Grambling St., Southern U, Dillard U, Xavier U, Alabama St. and Alabama A&M. In October 1997 we continued to expand by including Florida A&M (Tallahassee,FL) and Fort Valley St. (Fort Valley, GA) and Lane College (Jackson,TN).
